Nutrition Myths/Tips/Tricks

Eat your breakfast please!

Wow, your mother was right!

Did you know that almost 50% of those who do not eat breakfast will become or are already obese? It seems that evolution has not caught up to the average 21st century demanding lifestyle. Consuming your first meal of the day within the first hour of awakening, gives your metabolism the jump start it needs to start burning fat. This will, in turn, enable your mind and body to effectively deliver your desired results. You will experience far fewer afternoon crashes, and overall, have much more energy throughout the day.

Ready, set, COOK!

Most people become frustrated with what to eat during the middle of their work or busy day. This can be avoided by “batch” cooking. Cook two to three times the amount of food that you would usually prepare for you and/or your family. Then, separate equal portions of your protein and carbohydrates, so that you are not only limited to one food item that was prepared. Store these meals in plastic containers and take as many with you as necessary to withstand your 3 hour schedule. It’s a greater state of mind not having to force yourself into making quick impulsive decisions, reducing the risk of failing or cheating on your diet.  Besides, it’s always nice to have balanced meals ready at hand.

Unhealthy foods → EXIT HERE!

How can you eat unhealthy foods if they are not in your house to begin with? Don’t even buy unhealthy foods and beverages for your family either. The key to long term success is to find healthy alternatives to your favorite foods that are still enjoyable. For example, if you like to have toast with jelly, substitute the bread with whole wheat or grain bread. Instead of having jelly, top your toast with fresh fruit or find one that is not sweetened with added sugar. Eating the healthy alternative tastes great and gives your body plenty of nutrients that will assist in weight loss. A protein shake a day keeps the trainer away!

It has been proven that having one protein shake a day, as a snack or a meal, helps in burning undesirable body fat. The key is finding one that you like. Protein shakes assist in your daily protein consumption, while keeping your calorie intake at a minimum.

But I’m still hungry!

If the so called “healthy diet” often leaves you hungry, then those funny noises that your stomach makes really do have something meaningful to say! Here is the bottom line; your body will always burn more fuel (fat) when your metabolism is running at its optimal level. The body’s metabolism runs on an input/output system. If you have trained or are on a rest day (output) then it is controlled by the input. Eating on a 3-4 hour cycle is the most important element in controlling your overall body weight, fat, and water etc. When it is time for you to eat your calorie balanced meal, it’s time to eat!  Even if you do not follow a time controlled diet structure, having a healthy snack when you are hungry, is always the better way to go. You will give your metabolism a boost while you are sleeping and you will be less likely to having a late-night binge.

To My Late Night Bingers…

Some dieters and even main stream eaters, have what is often referred to as a late night binge (or at least the desire to do so). The reason for binging is not always a sign of low will power. I recommend, whether you are trying to lose or gain weight, that you should have a small meal every 3-4 hours to raise your metabolism’s efficiency. Skipping meals will lead to blood sugar levels dropping significantly, therefore, forcing the body into panic energy (fat) store mode. This will send a signal to the brain indicating that you are ravenously hungry (or that you are in dire need for a cupcake!).  Making sure that you are eating on the clock and consuming foods that are lower on the glycemic index, will eliminate your later daily hunger and will finally cap that sweet tooth!
